A dog has been tasered after attacking a police dog during an arrest at a gang pad in South Auckland this evening.
Auckland City Police shift commander Inspector Kerry Watson told 1News officers were carrying out patrols when they came across 10 Tribesmen gang members on motorcycles travelling north on the Waikato Expressway near Pōkeno around 6pm.
“They were driving quite dangerously at speeds estimated to be 120-130km/h,” he said.
More police resources, including a police helicopter, were sent out as backup.
Watson said officers signalled the group to stop as they entered the Ōtara area, but the bikes “took off at high speed”.
The group allegedly reached speeds of around 100km/h in a 50km/h area as they returned to their pad on Berrett Pl.
Police officers forced their way in after the gang members allegedly tried to prevent them from entering, leading to three arrests and the seizure of six bikes.
“We’re dealing with about another five other gang members and we’re trying to match them to the bikes.”
While officers were clearing the property, a dog at the scene “had an altercation with our police dog and actually attacked it”, Watson said.
“We had to Taser that dog to try and unlock its jaws from our police dog.
“We think at this stage, the police dog’s OK but maybe there will need to be a vet visit later on just to confirm that.”
Further arrests will result from the incident, he said.
