A 25-year-old man who allegedly attempted to evade police by hiding under a parked car in Auckland’s Flat Bush has been charged.

Counties Manukau East Inspector Rakana Cook said a vigilant store owner reported a man loitering at the back of the shops on Thomas Road in Flat Bush shortly before 2.30am today.

Cook said the man was seen trying to open several car doors as well as shop doors in the block, and officers responded quickly to the scene.

“On arrival, police searched the area and found the offender trying to hide underneath a parked vehicle, but instead he was brought out and put in handcuffs,” Cook said.

The 25-year-old man has been charged with burglary and would appear in the Manukau District Court next week.

Counties Manukau East had recently rolled out an operation in Flat Bush to crack down on an increase in burglaries and vehicle crime reported in the area.

“We are continuing to respond to these emerging issues, and taking every opportunity to disrupt this offending,” Cook said.

The public were encouraged to report any suspicious activity or offending as it happens online, through 105 or 111, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
