A fisher says seeing a pod of orcas, including a calf, swimming in the blue waters off Hakana Bay in Marlborough was an “amazing sight”.
Vicky Wiblin filmed the group of six orcas, including a smaller calf, swimming in formation in the waters off Hakana Bay, Port Underwood in Marlborough Sounds.
She told 1News it was a “spectacular show for many in the area”.
“I could see them from a distance cruising and feeding around the coastline in Hakana Bay, but whilst out fishing I witnessed an amazing sight of six orca in formation.
“It was a very special experience, something I can now tick off [my] bucket list, and was a great way to start my year.” she said.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) website said orca can be found all throughout New Zealand’s coastline.
It estimated there to be around 150 to 200 orca in New Zealand waters, who forage the seafloor for salmon, tuna, herring, cod, sharks and rays, sometimes in shallow water.
