A major water outage is affecting six West Auckland suburbs with official warnings that supply may not be restored for up to 24 hours.

The outage affects residents in parts of Henderson, Glen Eden, Sunnyvale, Henderson Valley, Kaurilands, and Oratia.

A break in a large-diameter water main on Mountain Rd in Henderson Valley has caused the supply disruption, according to council supplier Watercare.

Glendene, Konini, north Titirangi, Kelston and Waitākere may also be affected.

Three water tankers are en route to the affected suburbs and local residents are being urged to conserve water.

Watercare chief operations officer Mark Bourne said investigations into fixing the outage were underway, but that it could be up to 24 hours for water to be restored.

“Customers living at higher elevations are likely to experience no water. Others may experience lower pressure than normal. If residents have very low pressure or no water, we encourage them to turn off their taps,” he said in a media release.

“We’re investigating the extent of the damage to the 470mm-diameter water main, and at this stage we don’t know how long the repair will take.

“However, due to its size, it could be up to 24 hours to repair it and restore water.”

Bourne said there are two teams focused on restoring water to the suburbs “as soon as possible”, with one handling repairs to the water main, and the other “looking at options for reconfiguring the water network to restore supply”.

Tankers are being arranged to supply emergency water to the affected areas.

More information on their locations will be available on the Watercare website, he said.

“People will need to bring clean bottles, buckets or containers to collect water for drinking or hygiene purposes.”

Water tanks are expected to be available tonight from 391 Henderson Valley Rd, 255 Henderson Valley Rd, and the corner of Archibald Rd and Netherlands Ave, according to Watercare.

A section of Mountain Rd has also been closed as repairs are ongoing.

Watercare said it expected the road would remain closed for at least 48 hours.
