Two people have died after a two-vehicle crash in Otago last night.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Malaghans Rd in Dalefield between Queenstown and Arrowtown around 10pm yesterday evening.

Police say two people were found dead at the scene.

“The serious crash unit has conducted a scene examination and the road reopened about midday,” a spokesperson said.

A St John spokesperson said three ambulances and one helicopter were sent to the scene.

“Our crews assessed and treated one patient in a moderate condition and four patients in a minor condition; all were transported to Lakes District Hospital by road,” the spokesperson said.

There was also a separate incident in Matamata overnight, leading to a person being airlifted to Waikato Hospital in “critical condition”.

It brings the Matariki holiday road toll to two.
