Two people have died in separate single-vehicle crashes in Auckland and Southland overnight.
Police responded to reports of a ute rolling on the Niagara-Tokanui Highway between McManus Rd and Quarry Hills Fortification Rd in Southland at around 8.35pm.
“Sadly, one person died at the scene,” a spokesperson said.
St John said it responded with two helicopters, two ambulances and one rapid response unit.
“Our crews assessed and treated one patient in a critical condition and one patient in a serious condition who were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital,” a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile at about 4.30am, emergency services were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash on South Head Rd, northwest of Helensville in Auckland.
“One person died at the scene, and another was transported to hospital to be assessed.
“The road remains closed while emergency services work at the scene.”
Inquiries into the circumstances of both crashes were ongoing.
Car crashes into Hastings home
Police have also appealed for information after a vehicle crashed into a house in Hastings last night. Emergency services were called to Birkenhead Cres in Flaxmere at around 9.30pm after reports a vehicle left the road and went onto a property.
“Fortunately, the occupants of the house were not injured,” a police spokesperson said.
“The driver and a passenger fled the scene.”
Police have asked to hear from anyone who may have seen a “poorly painted” blue Ford Falcon with no registration plates driving in the area prior to the crash.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who might have CCTV footage from the area that may have captured footage of the incident or the vehicle/occupants.”
Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
