Twenty people who entered an Auckland motorway on foot during a protest convoy organised by Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki in November have been fined.
In November, the “Make New Zealand Great Again” protests saw a convoy travel from Mercer in Waikato to the Auckland Domain.
They were protesting the flying of flags other the official NZ ensign.
At one stage it blocked State Highway 1’s northbound lanes near Bombay as people rushed into the lanes on foot to perform a haka.
Police at the time said the actions were “reckless, unlawful, and extremely irresponsible” .
Today Superintendent Naila Hassan said police were able to identify 20 people who encroached onto the motorway on foot.
“We took enforcement action against them,” she said.
“We believe the actions of the group posed serious safety risks to themselves and other motorists using the network at the time. Police will continue to take appropriate action in these circumstances.”
Police said the enforcement action took the form of infringement notices.
Yesterday police said four people had been arrested in the wake of a Destiny-linked protest at the Te Atatū Community Centre in mid-February.
The group, including members of Man Up, stormed the centre to protest a children’s science show hosted by a drag artist.
Charges include assault and indecent assault.
