Evidence has been adjourned today in the Yanfei Bao murder trial due to defendant Tingjun Cao’s “physical health”.

Justice Lisa Preston called the jury into the High Court in Christchurch to give them the update.

“The position is that Mr Cao’s physical health this morning is such that I have reached the view it’s not appropriate to continue evidence today.”

She added that it was important Cao is able to continue to participate in his trial.

“And if his physical health prevents that, prevents him being able to continue to instruct his lawyers, then the right thing to do is to pause today and we will continue next Monday with evidence,” Justice Preston said.

“Sometimes these things arise and the court always tries to ensure that a fair trial continues.”

She reminded the jury to keep an open mind and ensure they only discuss the case with each other, as a group.

It follows the murder-accused appearing in court with a large bandage on his neck and another on his hand earlier in the week.
