Three people have died in a collision between a train and a car at a level crossing in Hamilton this morning.
Police said the collision at a level crossing on Peachgrove Rd was reported at about 4.30am.
Police said two other occupants were taken to Waikato Hospital, where they remain in a serious condition.
The serious crash unit has completed a scene examination, and police will now focus on establishing the circumstances of the crash.
“We will be speaking with the surviving occupants of the vehicle and those who witnessed the crash.”
Hamilton City Council said it was aware of a “major incident” at the Peachgrove Rd railway crossing.
It said on its social media that traffic was being diverted from Five Cross Rd and Ruakura Rd/Te Aroha St.
“Be patient and stay safe out there,” it said.
Inspector Andrea McBeth said incidents like this were “particularly hard” for everyone involved.
“I would like to acknowledge the actions by members of the public and emergency services who responded and managed what was a difficult scene.
“We will ensure there is support in place for those involved, their families and our staff who attended.
“Police extend our sympathies to the families of those who have lost a loved one in this tragic incident,” McBeth said.
Rail safety advocacy group TrackSAFE said today’s collision was “devastating”.
Manager Megan Drayton said collisions at level crossings were rare but often “catastrophic” when they do happen.
“This collision is an example of that, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all affected, the friends and whanau of the victims, and the rail staff and emergency services involved,” she said.
“Incidents like these leave lasting trauma.”
She urged people to take “extreme care” when approaching level crossings.
