A 10-year-old disc golf star from Christchurch is getting ready to jet off to the US to defend her world title.
It will be Sarah Wadsworth’s third time at the junior world championships.
In the build-up to her trip, even cold and moody Christchurch days won’t deter Wadsworth from getting all the practice she can.
Disc golf is typically played in public parks, and is growing in popularity.
Wadsworth was first invited to give it a go when she was six, thinking she was “going discoing”.
But, after playing it, she soon caught the eye of those in the know.
Her dad, Paul Wadsworth, who doubles as her coach, said Chris Davies pointed out she was good at the sport.
“[He] gave her a little set of four discs and said, I just wanted [you] to know I’ve been waiting 25 years to see somebody come along like this.”
Now, the 10-year-old has made quite a name for herself in the disc golf world.
She’s number one in her age group worldwide, and hopes to be the youngest person to turn pro.
But before then, Wadsworth, with her dad, will depart for the competition next week.
