Snow has started to fall on Cardrona, exciting ski resort operators as the season fast approaches.

Photos from the mountain this morning showed the resort’s base area under a light layer of snow.

“We woke up to a dusting of snow across the mountain, and it’s very cold up here today,” said Laura Hedley, general manager of Cardrona and Treble Cone Experiences.

“This change in weather is getting our team excited for another fantastic winter at Cardrona and Treble Cone.”

According to its website, Cardrona’s season would officially start on June 15, while Treble Cone would open on June 29.

While word from the the Wanaka skifields was exciting, the season’s start came with added pressure on Ruapehu.

On March 13, the Government announced a $7 million dollar bailout for Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, but made it clear this would be the last public money for the skifield.

That meant the North Island skifield would need to do well this season, or risk closing completely.
