The Australian and New Zealand beauty and makeup giant announced earlier this year it would be opening a new store in Dunedin “in the second half of this year”.
A Mecca spokeswoman said yesterday the new Dunedin store was expected to open in November.
She confirmed the store would be opening at 248 George St, the former site of Noel Leeming, which shut its doors in May last year following a review of its store network.
While Mecca was still determining an exact date for the store’s opening, there would be a temporary store opening on Friday, September 20, at 274 George St, near the entrance to Albion Pl, so customers could shop “a select range of products” before the official store launched in November.
It was still in the process of hiring for the store but had confirmed 18 staff members so far, the spokeswoman said.
Mecca is also recruiting for a new resort store in Queenstown.
The beauty chain has a network of more than 100 stores across New Zealand and Australia. The closest store to Dunedin is in Christchurch.
It features products from more than 200 makeup brands from around the world, and online job listings previously stated the perks of working at the new Dunedin store included an “unlimited” 40% discount.
The announcement follows the arrival of several other high profile international brands to the city.
Australian-owned women’s clothing chain Seed Heritage is set to open a new store in George St this month, and Kmart marked the end of its nearly four-year absence from the city with the opening of its South Dunedin store in June.
