Celebrity-spotting at Wimbledon has become almost as intriguing as the matchups on the famous turf of the All England Club.

British music royalty Sir Cliff Richard has been one of many stars to grace the tournament throughout the past fortnight.

Other notable celebrities included Cate Blanchett, David Beckham, Dave Grohl and John Cena.

“I’m a member at Wimbledon, after I’d been a member for a couple of years somebody said to me the easiest way to get in here is to win the tournament. Fortunately I got in for other reasons, because I started a charity that took tennis to young people in schools in Britain,” Sir Cliff told Breakfast.

However – the singer would be fully focused on his usual day job when he brings his tour to New Zealand in November for the first time in 12 years.

“The band I came with all those years ago once said to me ‘if you’re going to go to New Zealand and Australia and you can’t afford to take us, we’ll come for free’.”

“Because they love it. I’m with them too, I love Australia and I love New Zealand,” he said.

The 84-year-old may still be rocking out, but gone were the days of full-on partying while on tour.

“Been there, done that,” he laughed.

“The Shadows and I, when we first started off I made my first record when I was 17. By the time we were 18 and 19 we were touring. We’d sit and talk at night and we’d say ‘what are we going to do? We might be able to get another record in a month or so.’

“And we’d talk about age. I now do it because I love the feeling which you have when you’re introduced and the audience roars and you go out there… it’s almost tear-jerking.

“We never expected to be around this long, but we’re here.”

The tour would begin with two shows in Auckland at Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre on November 14 and 15.

It will then move to Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on November 17, and then the Christchurch Town Hall on November 19.
