Westpac has been hit by its second outage in two days, leaving thousands of customers unable to access their internet banking once again. The outage impacted Westpac, along with its subsidiary banks St George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA.

Westpac customers first started reporting issues on Tuesday at around 2pm AEST, with Down Detector showing a spike of more than 3,400 outage reports. This was around the same time an outage was reported by customers yesterday.

Westpac has now restored services nearly two hours after the issue was first reported. It confirmed some customers had been experiencing issues accessing online and mobile banking.

“Our online and mobile banking services have now been restored,” Westpac said.

“We apologise for the disruption this afternoon and thank you for your patience during this time.”

Yesterday’s outage was also resolved after two hours, with customers informed banking was online at 3:15pm. DownDetector reported more than 6,000 complaints about Westpac being down on Monday.

Westpac customers expressed their frustration over the outage on social media.

Some customers said they were unable to pay for their groceries or fuel, while business owners have said they couldn’t pay staff.

“2nd day in a row I’ve been stuck with a trolley full in Woolies!!!” one customer wrote.

“This is WILD.!! Two days in a row. Absolutely no access to money for our family, can’t accept payments for my business, no lunches today.!! You have got so many in a pickle here,” another said.

“Hopeless! 2 days now in a row stuck without cash cheers Westpac,” a third added.

Other customers threatened to switch banks over the outage, with some saying Westpac’s response was “not good enough”.

“I think it’s time to move from Westpac to Commonwealth Bank?” one said.

“Can anyone recommend a new bank? Maybe Commonwealth, ANZ?” another added.
