A second person has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of Mongrel Mob boss Steven Taiatini.

Taiatini was fatally struck by a vehicle on Saint John St in Ōpōtiki, following an altercation late on the evening of Friday, June 9, 2023.

A 38-year-old woman was due to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today on charges of murder. A 50-year-old man was also charged with the Mongrel Mob Barbarians leader’s murder on March 19.

Police said they were dedicated to finding answers and holding those responsible to account, both for Taiatini’s death and the incidents which surrounded it.

“The investigation continues and police remain interested in hearing from anyone with information that may be useful to us about what happened.”

In July last year, Detective Inspector Craig Rawlinson said a “series of violent events” in the Bay of Plenty Town took place in the lead-up to Taitini’s death.

His tangi became a talking point during last year’s election, with hundreds of gang members descending on the town.

Two people were arrested, and shots were fired from a vehicle.

Two schools voluntarily closed their doors, with some parents choosing to keep their kids at home for the day.
