Power has been restored to thousands of homes in Whangamatā after wet and windy weather caused a huge outage overnight.

Vector also restored power to parts of Auckland this morning as far north as Wellsford following earlier outages.

PowerCo reported that over 7000 properties across the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty region had unplanned outages this morning.

In a statement this afternoon, PowerCo said power was restored to more than 5000 properties at around 10.40am.

PowerCo’s head of network operations, Caz Haydon, said the outage was caused by equipment on the 33kV power line being damaged in wet and windy weather. The affected powerline supplies Whangamatā and the surrounding areas from Waihi with power.

“I’d like to personally thank our customers in eastern Coromandel for their patience and understanding as our crews worked to find the fault and then make repairs and restore supply,” Haydon said.

The battery energy story system (BESS) generator on the outskirts of Whangamatā supplied Whangamatā’s central business district with power during the outage.

North Shore power outages

Earlier, there were power outages across multiple suburbs of Auckland’s North Shore.

Outages were widespread from about 7am across Albany and Browns Bay, from Mairangi Bay to Long Bay as well as a large part of Muriwai.

Vector said power was restored shortly after 8am.
