Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has announced a new Waikato medical school in his briefing after the weekly meeting of Cabinet.
Ministers said: “Today’s decision will enable the University of Waikato to begin construction on new teaching facilities later this year and start planning for clinical placements, while giving more students the opportunity to study medicine in New Zealand.”

The Government released an infrastructure update showing $6 billion of state-funded construction is due to start between now and Christmas. Labour said all the projects had previously been announced, some by the last government, before being put on hold.
Inflation increased to a 12-month high of 2.7%, according to official figures out from Stats NZ.
The Government said on Friday more than $120 million from Budget 2025 will be used to help build 137 more classrooms in Auckland, to keep up with “the city’s rapid growth”.
Labour’s Camilla Belich’s Bill which would ensure that pay secrecy clauses, which prevent employees from discussing their salaries with colleagues, would no longer be enforceable was backed by National. The law would mean employers could not take legal action if an employee talked about pay.
