A driver stopped in west Auckland because officers recognised that he was forbidden to drive was found to have a loaded gun, cash and drugs in his car.

Police initially signalled a 36-year-old man to stop early yesterday morning “because they knew he was forbidden to drive and breaching the conditions of his bail”, Inspector Kelly Farrant said.

When they then began their search of the car they allegedly discovered the loaded sawn-off shotgun, meth and $5000 cash.

The sawn-off shotgun.

The arrest was made by Henderson beat team members on Arawa St, in New Lynn.

The man has been charged with breaching bail, unlawfully possessing a firearm and failing to comply with the terms of his licence.

He will appear in the Waitākere District Court.

“It’s pleasing to see our staff’s local knowledge shine and recognising potential risks to our communities,” Farrant said.

“In this case that good work has taken another firearm out of circulation, and a repeat offender faces the consequences of his actions.”
