Police have charged 27 motorists with being over the legal alcohol limit in a four-day operation targeting drink driving across the Central District.
A further 95 infringement notices were served, police said, which included 24 for restraints, speed and distractions.
With the Christmas period approaching, police ran nightly checkpoints across the region from November 27 to November 30.
Police Central District road policing manager Phil Ward said 27 drivers were caught over the legal limit across the four days.
“One vehicle was pink stickered, and nine vehicles were green stickered.” Green stickers signified a vehicle had compliance issues such as an expired Warrant of Fitness, while a pink sticker marked a vehicle as unsafe for the road.
Ward said staff from around the Central region assisted with the operation and police were “relatively pleased” with most motorists but they “remain disappointed” in people’s decisions to get behind the wheel after drinking.
A million tests in Auckland
Meanwhile, police districts across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland have conducted more than a million roadside breath tests so far in 2024.
Provisional figures relased by police showed 1,028,009 breath tests were completed between January 1 and November 30 this year. This compared with 726,723 for the same time period in 2023.
“These staggering numbers are a credit to our dedicated road policing teams within Tāmaki Makaurau who are out patrolling roads every day and are all focused on prevention and enforcement,” said Inspector Juliet Burgess, Tāmaki Makaurau Road Policing Manager.
“We have worked tirelessly alongside our road safety partners to prevent deaths and serious injuries from happening on our roads and consequently have seen a reduction in deaths and serious injuries.”
