Police investigating a homicide following a fatal house fire in the Whangārei district in late April have released CCTV images of a man they are seeking.

Emergency services were sent to a blaze at a Thomas St address in Tikipunga shortly after 3am on April 29.

The sole occupant of the address, 61-year-old Hoani Reuben, also known as John, died as result of the fire.

Following police inquiries, it was established the fire was arson and subsequently a homicide investigation was launched.

Today, Detective Senior Sergeant John Clayton called Rueben’s death a “tragedy” and said police were still seeking the public’s assistance with the case.

“Police have obtained CCTV footage of a person riding a bicycle in the Thomas Street area at the time of the fire.

“We believe this person may be able to assist us with our enquires,” he said.

Clayton urged anyone who saw the person pictured on the night of April 29, or recognised them, to contact police.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who might know who owns the bicycle.”
