A police presence will remain across the Wairarapa today after a man was killed and two were arrested when a vehicle was shot at yesterday.

Police responded to reports of a firearm being discharged at a car leaving a Featherston supermarket carpark at around 4pm on Saturday.

“A short time later, a man has been located in Carterton with an apparent gunshot wound, he has since died,” said Detective Inspector John van den Heuvel.

Carterton New World was closed following the incident but reopened on Sunday morning.

A second vehicle fled the Featherston scene and was intercepted by police “without incident” at Kaitoke on Remutaka Hill, said van den Huevel.

“Charges are still being considered for the two men taken into custody yesterday.”

The Featherston location examination was expected to be completed cleared this morning and scenes in Kaitoke and Carterton had been cleared, he added.

“A post-mortem of the deceased is expected to take place in Wellington tomorrow.”

Police appealed for information from the public regarding the ongoing homicide investigation.

“We know a number of people would have seen elements of what happened yesterday, and we are keen to talk to you if you have not already spoken to police.”

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
