A pedestrian has been critically injured after being struck by a train on a rail bridge in Timaru this afternoon.

Police were notified of the incident near Saltwater Creek in Redruth around 3.30pm today.

“A person has been struck by a locomotive on a rail bridge in Timaru,” KiwiRail chief operations officer Paul Ashton confirmed to 1News.

Hato Hone St John told 1News it responded with an ambulance, helicopter, operations manager, and a rapid response vehicle.

Emergency services remain on site.

One person has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.
