A roadside dispute in Waikato overnight has ended with one man dead from stab wounds and another taken into custody.

Police said in a statement today that a homicide investigation has begun after a man was stabbed in Rotongaro, west of Huntly.

Police were called to Hetherington Rd around 10.40pm after reports of a stabbing following a roadside altercation.

“A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody,” said Detective Inspector Daryl Smith.

The man died at the scene and police said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

St John responded with one ambulance and one rapid response unit but said it was not required to transport anyone.
