An injured man is under police guard in Waikato Hospital after a person was killed in Hamilton — and two others seriously injured — in a violent incident shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.

Police said this morning a homicide investigation has been launched after the incident in Douglas Crescent, Fairfield, overnight that left one person dead and three others seriously injured.

Emergency services were called to a report of an assault at the property shortly after midnight.

Police said a 34-year-old man was found a short distance from the address with serious injuries and was also taken to hospital, where he remained under police guard.

Hato Hone St John said its services were called uust after 12am. On arrival ambulance officers found four critically injured patients, who were taken to Waikato Hospital.

In all, five ambulances attended with two rapid response crews and two managers.

Police said a scene examination was taking place at the property today.

“Police would like to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to the wider public,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

A 34-year-old man was expected to face charges “in due course in relation to the incident”, police said.
