One person has died in a serious three-vehicle crash in Otago this morning, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash on Cromwell-Clyde Highway in Cromwell Gorge at about 6.35am.

“Police can confirm one person was located deceased following what is believed to be a three-vehicle crash involving two trucks and a car on Cromwell-Clyde Highway this morning,” a spokesperson said.

“One of the truck drivers sustained a minor injury and was assessed at the scene.

“The Serious Crash Unit and CVST are conducting an investigation to determine what occurred.”

The road remained closed at 10.30am.

“Motorists are advised to delay travel through the area,” police said. “Police do not recommend a detour through Hawksburn Rd from Clyde to Bannockburn as it is narrow, and unsuitable for 2wd vehicles.”

St John sent two ambulances to the scene.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson earlier said two fire crews attended, adding one of the trucks was on its side.

NZTA Waka Kotahi warned that Easter traffic was building in the area this week.

“Drivers may need to take the Lindis Pass to get to Wānaka and Queenstown this morning.

“At this stage, SH8 looks likely to be closed all morning between Clyde and Cromwell.”
