Northland police have today revealed they are investigating the death of a young girl who died in October 2015.

Alestra Kepa-Hati, four, was living with caregivers in rural Kaikohe when she died.

“As part of this investigation we are looking into the circumstances of her death, which at this stage is being treated as unexplained,” Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Fouhy said.

“Police, including the CIB, are making further inquiries into this matter, and are gathering information about the circumstances leading up to Alestra’s death.”

They are asking anyone who may have information to come forward.

“The death of a child is a tragic and distressing incident for all involved and police are working to understand exactly what has happened.”

According to Stuff, Alestra died in Starship Hospital after being admitted with brain damage.
