Southland’s The Fat Duck has been named New Zealand’s best gastropub.

The Te Anau restaurant and bar was named Supreme Champion at the 2025 Estrella Damm Top 50 New Zealand Gastropubs Awards last night.

The business, owned by Cam Davies and Selina Wright, was recognised for its “outstanding culinary offerings, service, and commitment to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere”.

Hospitality New Zealand said the owners had set a “benchmark in the industry, showcasing innovative cuisine that honours local produce and reflects New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage”.

“Winning the Supreme Award at the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs is an incredible honour and a testament to our team’s passion and hard work,” Davis said.

“Hospitality is about creating experiences, and we’ve always strived to blend great food, genuine service, and a welcoming atmosphere.

“To be recognised at this level, among so many outstanding venues, is something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s a win not just for us, but for our local producers, our community, and everyone who walks through our doors.”

Franklins Bar & Eatery in Pukekohe won the Upper North Island category, Wellington’s Thistle Inn won the Lower North Island award, Strawberry Tree in Kaikoura won the Upper South Island category, and The Fat Duck won in the Lower South Island.

The award for a best-paired meal went to Thistle Inn.

The sustainability category was not awarded this year.

Judge Tash McGill said that while there were “commendable efforts”, judges sought more “deeply integrated, localised practices”.

“Judges were looking for sustainability initiatives that go beyond best practice and are woven into the everyday operations,” McGill said.

“To uphold the award’s integrity, we chose not to name a winner. We encourage future entrants to use Hospitality NZ’s new Sustainability Strategy as a framework for their efforts.”
