New Zealand’s best Airbnb listings and hosts have been recognised at the platform’s annual awards.
The annual awards celebrated the top listings offered across the country, which people can rent and stay in.
The winners were selected based on Airbnb data, guest scores and reviews, with oversight from a panel of judges.
The host of the year award went to the North Island’s Jenni and Craig. They offered a “stunning” private studio in Tamahere, which Airbnb described as having a “cosy, homely environment and unique personal touches.”
“Known for its cleanliness and comfort, the studio provides a welcoming retreat where guests can relax and unwind. Hosting on Airbnb has even allowed Jenni and Craig to fund their own travels.”
Wellington residents Ryan and Ying were the best new hosts. Their guest house offered an “architectural take on a cabin in the woods.”
“The property aims to provide guests with a restful and rejuvenating experience, featuring an infrared sauna with garden views.”
Best nature stay went to a handcrafted, secluded timber cabin in Raglan – hosted by Kent and Nicola.
Offering views of Mount Karioi and rolling farmland, the off-grid cabin offered “modern comforts powered by solar energy with features like an outdoor bath and copper rain head shower”.
The best design stay was at the Kahutara PurePod in Kaikoura, hosted by Stephanie. The all-glass “pod” allows guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape.
“The minimalist decor, transparent bedhead, and focus on sustainability enhance the guest experience.”
A new category, best family stay, went to “The Big Batch,” hosted by Kelly in Paraparaumu. It was described as an “expansive” family-friendly retreat able to accommodate 23 guests across nine rooms.
“With amenities like portacots, a high chair, children’s books, games and even a boat integrated into the deck, there are endless entertainment options.
“The property also features outdoor games, a games room with table tennis and air hockey, water sports equipment, a heated spa pool and beachfront access. Guests enjoy various outdoor spaces including multiple decks with dining areas, a BBQ and an outdoor kitchen.”
The best room stay went to a property called “Waterfront Paradise”, hosted by Gerry and Jeannette.
“Guests often receive a warm greeting, sometimes accompanied by a glass of wine, and flexible arrival and departure times.
“They provide tips for guests’ days and enjoy learning about their lives, creating a home-like atmosphere. Hosting on Airbnb has even helped them to fund the construction of their 15-metre catamaran and enjoy lovely holidays.”
Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb’s country manager for New Zealand, said it was “inspiring” to see how the hosts promoted local culture and contributed to their communities.
