A motorcyclist has died following a crash in the Whakatāne district, while another person has died in a separate two-vehicle crash in Northland.

In a statement, police confirmed a motorcycle rider has died following a crash on Main Rd, Murupara shortly before 1pm today.

“Efforts to resuscitate the person were unsuccessful and they died at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

One other person was hospitalised with serious injuries in the crash.

The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination, and inquiries into the cause of the incident “are ongoing”.

“The road is now re-opened and we thank motorists for their patience,” a police spokesperson said.

In Northland this afternoon, emergency services responded to a serious two-vehicle crash which injured several people and closed part of State Highway 10 in Waipapa.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash, between Pungaere and Kapiro roads at Waipapa, about 4.10pm.

“Sadly, one the occupants of the vehicles died at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

One other person was flown to hospital with serious injuries and four others were treated for minor injuries.

State Highway 10 remained closed while the Serious Crash Unit carried out a scene examination, police said.

Motorcyclist critically injured in Auckland

In a separate crash in Auckland this morning a motorcyclist was taken to hospital in a critical condition after colliding with a car.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Pakuranga Rd and Stanniland St in Pakuranga shortly after 8.50am today after a motorcycle and car crashed.

“The motorcyclist is said to have critical injuries,” police said.

St John said one person had been transported to Auckland City hospital in a critical condition.

In an update this afternoon, police said the motorcyclist remains in hospital and is undergoing surgery.

“The circumstances of the crash will be investigated,” police said.
