A motorcyclist has been killed in a collision with a car on State Highway 1 between Ōtaki and Levin this morning.
The road was closed “for several hours” after the incident, with a nearby marae open to those waiting.
Emergency services responded to the scene at Manakau between Whakahoro Rd and Kuku East Rd just before 10.20am, police said.
The motorcyclist died at the scene.
NZTA Waka Kotahi said the major highway was reopened at 2.25pm.
“State Highway 1 has reopened following this morning’s serious crash near Manakau,” the agency advised.
“While the highway is open, drivers can expect ongoing delays until queued traffic clears. Northbound queues are currently back to Ōtaki, and southbound queues are back Kimberley Rd.
“Drivers are asked to be patient and drive with care through the area.”
Police earlier advised motorists travelling on State Highway 1 to delay any non-essential travel, as diversions were via Palmerston North and the Remutaka Hill, Wellington.
“Te Iwi o Ngati Tukorehe Marae has opened to provide a place for those who are waiting for the road to open to have a cup of tea and wait,” a police spokesperson said.
The marae was at 608 SH1, Kuku, just north of Manakau.
Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1News two crews responded from Ōtaki and Levin.
They said crews assisted St John and police at the scene.
Hato Hone St John said it sent one ambulance, one manager and one rapid response vehicle shortly after 10am.
One person was “assessed and treated at the scene” after sustaining minor injuries in the crash, a St John spokesperson said.
Police thanked motorists for their cooperation.
New Zealand Transport Agency said police serious crash investigations would be required following the incident.
Manakau Primary School also earlier advised the community there may be disruptions to picking up children.
“Many of you will be aware that there has been a car accident just north of Manakau,” the school said on social media. “We are hoping that this will be cleared before pick up time, but will give you an update closer to 3pm — around 2.30pm.
“If the delay continues past this time, please rest assured that your child/ren will be able to stay at school until you are able to pick them up.”
