An Australian tourist reported missing yesterday from the Tonagriro region may have travelled to the South Island, according to police.

Elizabeth Wielga, 67, is believed to have checked out of her accommodation in Tongariro on August 30 and was due to fly out of Auckland later that day.

In a statement, police said her family were concerned for her welfare and wanted to establish that she was safe.

Wielga does not have a phone or computer, and it’s possible she doesn’t realise police are trying to locate her, a police spokesperson said.

“Thanks to information received from the public today, police believe Wielga travelled to Wellington after checking out of her accommodation in Tongariro on August 30.

“Information suggests she may be intending to travel to Picton.”

Police thanked those who had provided information to date and encouraged anyone who had seen Wielga to contact officers on 105.
