A Southland man has been sentenced to three months community detention and banned from owning dogs for 10 years after he was caught on camera kicking and throwing his dog.

Warning: This article includes details that may be upsetting.

The offender was seen kicking and throwing his brown and white male bull terrier named Klanga in August 2022.

The loud screaming and yelping sounds alerted a member of the public who captured the offender’s actions on security cameras fixed to his business.

In the footage, Klanga was picked up by his right leg and thrown to the ground before being kicked in his hip and shoulder.

High pitched yelps could be heard from Klanga as he cowered on the ground.

Video shows further incidents of the offender kicking his dog in the head and stomach multiple times.

SPCA was notified of the incident and the footage captured was obtained. It took possession of Klanga pending investigation into the matter and for the dog to undergo an examination.

The veterinary examination found Klanga was showing signs of fear: dilated pupils, a rapid heartbeat, fine muscle tremors all over his body and a tucked tail. He also flinched when he was touched.

Experts concluded his vocalisations showed he was subjected to “deliberate” infliction of unreasonable and unnecessary emotional pain, suffering and distress.

SPCA chief executive Todd Westwood said the case was “extremely upsetting” and would have been “deeply affecting” for those who could hear Klanga’s “helpless yelps”.

“Klanga was frightened of the person he should have been able to trust, thank goodness for the care and concern of those who heard his screams.”

The offender was also ordered to pay reparations of $2223.60 and $100 toward legal costs.
