A homicide investigation has been launched after a man was fatally assaulted at a bus stop in the Auckland suburb of St Johns last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves said emergency services were called to reports a person had been assaulted by more than one person on St Johns Rd about 10pm on Saturday.

The 33-year-old victim was transported to hospital in a critical condition, where he died from his injuries.

“The offenders are believed to have left the area in a vehicle, travelling towards Remuera Rd,” Greaves said.

St John told 1News it sent one ambulance, one rapid response unit, and one manager to the scene shortly before 10pm.

“One patient was assessed, treated, and transported to Auckland City hospital in a critical condition,” a St John spokesperson said.

St Johns Rd would remain closed between Blackett Crescent and Dorchester Street while a scene examination was carried out.

Auckland Transport said three bus routes – 65, 75 and RBE – would detour to Glen Innes via Temple St, Fancourt St, Parsons Rd and Dorchester St while the road was closed.

Footage captured by 1News showed forensic investigators and police photographers working at the scene on Sunday morning.

A blue tent had been erected over the bus stop where the assault happened.

“We are making inquiries to locate the offenders and the vehicle they left in, and at this time are still working to determine why this tragic event occurred,” Greaves said.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation was urged to contact police on 105, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
