A man has been charged with murder over the death of Hāwera man Whatitiri Whakaruru, police say.

The 46-year-old man was arrested earlier this week and is now due to appear in the New Plymouth High Court on May 17.

On Wednesday, police named Whakaruru, 26, as the person who died after he sustained “serious injuries”.

Officers were called to a property on Hāwera’s Gladstone Road, just after 10pm on Tuesday, to a report of a “disorder-related” incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Debbie Gower said today that police continued to appeal to the public for information, but that nobody else was alleged to have been involved.

“As this matter is now before the court, we are unable to provide any further details.

“While we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death, we continue to appeal for information from anyone who saw anything that could relate to the incident, on Gladstone Road between 9.30pm and 11pm on Monday, April 22.”

People with information have been urged to call 105.
