A man was arrested in Matamata last night after a person had been found with stab wounds at a residential address.

Police were called to the Elizabeth St address at around 8.30pm where a person was found in a “critical condition”.

They were rushed to hospital “with injuries consistent with stab wounds”.

At around 10.17pm, officers located the alleged offender driving along Okauia Springs Rd towards Matamata.

“Police successfully deployed road spikes on Tower Rd, the vehicle continued onto Burwood Rd before the vehicle eventually came to a stop on the intersection on Gunn Rd and Peria Rd, Matamata around 10:35pm,” Detective Sergeant Michael Kaukau said.

The man was taken to hospital in a “serious condition” with injuries from an earlier incident.

“Scene examinations are taking place at two Matamata locations today in relation to the overnight incidents,” Kaukau said.

A 34-year-old man was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, and aggravated failing to stop.

He was due to appear in the Hamilton District Court today.
