A large grass fire that was threatening multiple homes in Hastings this afternoon has now been contained.

Crews were called to the grass fire in Haumoana at around 4.15pm, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson told 1News. The blaze was 300m by 400m when firefighters arrived.

The fire had endangered multiple properties.

FENZ said the fire was declared contained as of 5.40pm.

Six trucks and seven specialist vehicles were currently at the scene, four of which were water tankers.

“FENZ is asking members of the public to stay away from the area unless absolutely necessary.”

Police were also on the scene to deal with traffic control.
