A large building fire at a small settlement between Whakatāne and Murupara has required the efforts of multiple brigades in the region to extinguish.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson said multiple calls were received around 1am, reporting a single-storey building on fire at Waiōhau.

The building was estimated by FENZ to be approximately 900 square metres.

At the peak of the blaze, a second alarm was transmitted, resulting in five fire trucks, two water tankers, a command unit and a support vehicle attending the scene.

FENZ was currently still in attendance, with a fire investigator.

Waiōhau is a rural valley settlement in the Whakatāne District and Bay of Plenty region.
