A Kiwi musicians custom Harley Davidson has been won at auction by a Gisborne-based motorbike enthusiast for almost $29,000.

Earlier this month L.A.B. frontman Joel Shadbolt announced he was selling the bike through an auction on TradeMe, with some of the proceeds going towards youth mental health charity I Am Hope.

Shadbolt said the bike was a visual representation of L.A.B.’s debut album artwork that has been transformed into a “true masterpiece”.

Auction winner Mark told 1News he was “refreshing every 10 seconds” on the auction site.

“The talent in that band is absolutely mind-blowing and that was one of the reasons behind buying the bike. I like the story behind it,” he said.

Mark admitted he had some bikes he rode “all the time” and others that were “rare, uncommon bikes” that he only brought out on special occasions.

He praised Shadbolt for selling something that he’d “put his soul into” and said he was “humble as anything”.

“That’s New Zealander of the Year type stuff right there,” said Mark.

Shadbolt told 1News he was “really happy with how the auction went”.

“I Am Hope will be receiving portion of the profits made from the bike sale tomorrow,” he said.

Mark said the work that I Am Hope charity founder Mike King did was “bloody awesome”.

“To be going to a good cause, that’s just like a bonus. I would have probably bought the bike even if it wasn’t for charity,” Mark said.
