Police have opened a homicide investigation following the death of a man at a property in Pātea this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Debra Gower said police were called to a family harm incident at the Dorset St address around 8.55am on Saturday.

A man was found with critical injuries at the scene, she added.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was unable to be revived and died at the scene.”

Cordons were in place and a scene examination would be carried out over the coming days, Gower said.

“We do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and we are providing them with support at this tragic time.”

Gower said the investigation was in its early stages but the public could expect to see an increased police presence in Pātea while inquiries continued.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the property and charges were being considered.

Pātea is 61km northwest of Whanganui and 85km southeast of New Plymouth.
