Police have asked witnesses to a shooting on Thursday night that rocked Auckland’s Grey Lynn to “come forward and do the right thing”.
An 18-year-old man died in the incident, police said. Three other men were injured and they remained in hospital today in serious but stable conditions: “Police are hoping to interview them as soon as they are well enough.”
A homicide investigation was launched in the wake of the death.
Officers will going door to door seeking CCTV and speaking to neighbours this weekend, a police statement said today.
Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said police know “there are more people out there with information to share”.
“Police know there were a number of people present when the shooting occurred, and we need to speak with those individuals at the earliest opportunity,” he said in a statement today.
“The circumstances of this homicide are not limited to the events on Thursday night.
“We know there have been tensions at play between the groups involved, for some time, and any piece of information that might help us build a picture of what has occurred will be welcomed.
“It’s understandable that those living in the area will be feeling shaken and possibly unsure about coming forward to police, but we’re telling you it’s the right thing to do – you don’t have to stand for this violence in your community.
“If you can help, we need to hear from you.”
Police also asked nearby residents to check their properties “and if you locate anything out of place, please call us”.
Anyone with information was urged to contact police on 105.
“There will also be a police mobile command unit at the scene, and people with information are able to approach us directly there.”
A scene guard remained at the property today as the scene examination continued.
Nearby roads are now reopened and the scene will be blessed today, police said.
