On Monday, Spelt Bakery in Gladstone Rd South, Mosgiel, opened its doors for customers to enjoy a variety of fresh baked goods and, of course, classic pies.
It is the franchise’s third location — the other stores are in Highgate, Maori Hill, and Main Rd, Fairfield.
They were not the only new bakery to open in Dunedin recently — Roslyn Bread Technologies & O.A.A also opened in Highgate last week.
And a fourth Bakehouse on Bond bakery is due to open on Monday in Ward St.
Spelt Bakery owner James Musk said the first day of trading had gone “great”.
“It’s been a couple of months of hard work getting here — it’s good to just provide fresh food every day to Mosgiel, made by hand.”
The bakery has three new fulltime staff and will be open Monday to Friday, from 6.30am to 2pm.
Mr Musk decided to open a store in Mosgiel because he felt there was a gap in the market, and there was demand.
“The opportunity arose to take that site that we’ve got now, and here we are.”
He was happy to have opened his store at the same time as two other bakeries, as “it’s always good to have a lot of fresh baking around”.
Bakehouse on Bond owner Tom Bullock said opening the new store was a homecoming of sorts.
“We’re actually coming back to that site. We were the original owners 13 years ago.”
The new Bakehouse on Bond replaces the Ward St Depot at the site, and all existing staff will be retained.
