Two beleaguered national chains are reopening most of their stores for fire sales – but Dunedin shoppers hunting for a bargain will have to wait.

Sales were held nationwide yesterday for appliance and furniture retailer Smiths City, which entered voluntary administration on Tuesday, and kitchenware retail Kitchen Things, which went into receivership two weeks ago.

However, neither of the chains’ Dunedin stores were open.

Kitchen Things receiver Stephen Keen, of Grant Thornton New Zealand, said the logistics were not in place yesterday for Dunedin’s store to open.

‘‘We expect to resolve this early next week to open,’’ he said.

All Kitchen Things stores except for Hamilton, which was not impacted by the receivership and administration and was trading as usual throughout, and Dunedin reopened yesterday morning to sell all remaining products.

A spokeswoman for Smiths City administrators, BDO NZ, said there was ‘‘nothing more we can share at this stage’’.

Further updates would be given over the coming days, she said.

Liquidations sales were held in Auckland and Christchurch yesterday afternoon and would continue at the retailer’s Greymouth, Oamaru, Alexandra, Gore and Invercargill stores this morning.
