Two people have died after a serious crash in Southern Marlborough this morning.

Police were alerted to the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Kekerengu shortly before 11am.

Police said this afternoon that two people had been killed in the crash, while two others were hospitalised with moderate injuries.

“State Highway 1 is now open between Kaikoura and Blenheim following a fatal crash near Kerekerengu earlier today,” an NZTA spokesperson said.

“NZTA/Waka Kotahi extends its sympathies to the families and friends of the victims and urges all road users to drive with care over the Easter Holiday weekend.

“We want to see everyone reach their destinations safely.”

Police also earlier urged Kiwi drivers to take care and be patient on the roads this Easter.

“It’s all about drivers and road users making simple decisions to keep themselves and others safe,” Auckland Inspector Scott Webb said.

“We would rather you overindulge in chocolate and hot cross buns, rather than alcohol.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Easter.”
