Two allegedly wild riders are back on foot in Hawke’s Bay after police seized their motorbikes in a crackdown down on dangerous behaviour.

Police received a large number of reports of the bikes being ridden dangerously in Napier parks, reserves and streets — and the riders subsequently failed to stop when signalled to do so by officers.

On information, police conducted a search warrant on Friday at a Marewa property and impounded the two motorbikes.

Police said two youths were referred to Youth Aid as a result of the warrant.

Sergeant David Power said in a statement that the message from police was clear: “If you ride your dirt or off-road bike where you shouldn’t and/or in an antisocial manger, you can expect that we will do everything in our power to firstly identify you and then take appropriate enforcement action.”

While most dirt bike riders were aware of the laws and didn’t cause issues, it was a “few bad riders” who were giving the rest a bad reputation, Power said.

“We understand your outrage with dirt bike riders who ignore road rules, and show little concern for the community.”

Power said police would like to thank those in the community who reported information in relation to this behaviour.
