A man has been arrested after allegedly riding a dirt bike dangerously through traffic in Auckland on Sunday morning — despite a warning from police to stop.

Police pulled up the dirt bike rider who who had been reportedly performing wheelies and riding into oncoming traffic in Manurewa at around 9.30am on Sunday.

“The officer asked the rider to stop his behaviour and leave the area as he was putting other drivers at risk,” said Inspector Warrick Adkin.

The rider was allegedly undeterred by the warning and left the scene at speed, riding into oncoming traffic.

The police helicopter Eagle tracked the rider to an address in Takanini, where officers arrested the man and stopped a vehicle attempting to leave.

A woman at the wheel of the car was also arrested for displaying Mongrel Mob insignia inside the car.

Adkins said the helicopter allowed police to follow at a safe distance so lights and sirens were not required.

“The incident was resolved without harm to any members of the public.”

The 32-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

A 34-year-year-old woman is facing charges of obstruction and prohibited display of gang insignia in a public place.

Both were expected to appear in Manukau District Court on May 15.
