Police have stood down cordons in the Taupō CBD after a gas leak led to evacuations this morning.

Building occupants were asked to remain inside as cordons were put in place.

“Police responded to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand with cordons following a gas leak at a Horomatangi St property,” a spokesperson said.

Cordons were put in place for an 800 metre radius around Horomatangi St at several intersections and the lakefront.

Those in buildings were advised to remain inside with the windows closed and air conditioning off.

“Police are no longer on scene, and we would like to thank the community for their understanding while the situation was resolved.”

Fire and Emergency NZ said two crews were deployed to the gas leak around 10am.
