A 20-year-old driver has been arrested and charged following a crash near the University of Auckland yesterday which injured five people.

Auckland City acting inspector Scott Jones said five pedestrians were injured in the crash on Symonds Street, two of them treated at the scene.

“One man remains in a serious but stable condition in Auckland City Hospital, with two others recovering at home,” he said.

Jones said the 20-year-old driver has been arrested and charged with three counts of careless driving causing injury.

He has also been forbidden to drive.

Jones said the driver has been bailed to appear in the Auckland District Court on March 28.

“Our investigation is continuing into the circumstances of the crash, and we cannot rule out further charges being laid.”

At the time, a witness told 1News the car left the road and drove along the footpath for about 20m.

They also said the car tried to turn back onto the road at the lights but hit the tree instead.

Stephen Dimapalis, a university student who saw the crash, said he heard a “big bang” and turned around to see two people on the ground.

“I was so terrified. I was out of it,” he said.
