Police are planning to respond to “anti-social road user gatherings” expected to take place across the country over the King’s Birthday weekend.

It said the plans were in place to “help ensure safety for all”.

On King’s Birthday weekend last year, a Levin boy racer event took place where a spectator being struck by the back of a car doing burnouts.

The person was flung into the air before landing heavily on the road. Another person was knocked over by a car that mounted a footpath.

A local resident said he had seen “nothing to this extent”, and Police Minister Mark Mitchell said at the time it was “atrocious” and “unlawful”.

“This activity carries huge risk for those people who take part and who observe, and is concerning and distressing to members of the public.

“Police will not tolerate behaviour which endangers others and causes damage to roads and property, and will respond appropriately to hold people to account for any offending.”
