A man has been arrested over the alleged armed robbery of an cash-in-transit van on Auckland’s North Shore on Tuesday afternoon.

Security staff were delivering cash to the ATM machine on Birkenhead Ave in Birkenhead when they were approached just before 2.30pm.

Police said a firearm was allegedly pulled during the robbery, and a person made off with money in a case.

Following the search of an address in Northcote overnight, a 43-year-old man was taken into custody and charged over the robbery.

The man will appear in the North Shore District Court today, charged with aggravated robbery and commission of a crime with a firearm.

Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said police had worked hard to find a suspect.

“It’s pleasing we have made an arrest so soon into the investigation, given the brazen nature of this alleged offending.

“We will not tolerate this offending, especially when a firearm is allegedly presented.

“I know news of this arrest will bring some reassurance to the Birkenhead community.”

Last week, a man was critically injured in a stabbing and found by a member of the public on February 4.

As of Monday, a suspect was yet to be located, and police asked anyone with relevant information to call 105.

Police said on Monday the victim was recovering from his injuries.

North Shore area commander inspector Stefan Sagar earlier said that police did not believe it was a “random incident”.
