Anne Hathaway has confirmed that a third Princess Diaries film is in the works at Disney, two decades after the previous instalment was released.
The 41-year-old actress played Mia Thermopolis, a girl who discovered she was the heir to a small fictional European country of Genovia.
Her grandmother, Genovian Queen Clarisse – played by Julie Andrews – travels to the US to prep Mia to take over her kingdom one day.
Hathaway announced on social media today that she would be reprising her role.
“Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues,” Hathaway captioned the video.
Adele Lim has also been announced to helm the threequel. She recently directed Joy Ride and co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” she said in a statement.
“We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The first two films were directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.
As for the rest of the cast of the film, it is unknown if Julie Andrews, now 89, will return in her role.
